Last year, we had a winter visitor with dementia, who was still driving, reported missing. It was believed he was trying to drive back to his home state. His remains were found a year later, about 100 miles away, in the dessert. Very sad.
Warning signs for Seniors indicating that it may be time to quit driving include:
Close call accidents
Getting lost in frequently traveled areas
Increased traffic tickets/warnings.
Seniors fear dementia, but that is not the only reason why they might need to ‘turn in their car keys.’ Some other reasons could include impaired eyesight or hearing, reduced flexibility or strength, and reduced reaction time.
